For the longest time in my career, I often viewed myself as a fraud with every employer I worked with. But was I actually a fraud? In fact, quite the opposite—I was constantly allowing myself to be overwhelmed with work responsibilities beyond what was required. So where was this feeling coming from? Why did I feel that way about myself? I had no answer to these questions until recently when I learned about this phenomenon, understood as Imposter Syndrome.

To put it simply, Imposter Syndrome is the condition where every success of yours feels unearned. Although your hard work is evident, your inner voice keeps telling you that you didn’t deserve any of your achievements.

When this syndrome was first described in the 1970s, it was initially found that successful women in particular had this condition. These women struggled to internalize their achievements and often feared of being exposed as frauds. Despite the clear evidence of their hard work, they credited luck for their success and achievements. However, Imposter syndrome is now found to be common across all genders and age groups as per the recent study.

Imposter syndrome is just about the feeling and not the actual incompetence. While certain individuals may experience this feeling after a big success, others may struggle with it throughout. This can be very frustrating because you know you’ve earned your achievements but that inner critic keeps telling you otherwise.

The Roots of Self-Doubt

The root causes of this syndrome can be attributed to factors like societal expectations, perfectionism, and the habit of making comparisons. In the present world, social media like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have further contributed to the prevalence of this issue. These platforms allow people to compare their lives based on the highlight reels others share online. Such comparison can often lead individuals to develop feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.

Early life experience and family dynamics also play a significant part in inviting a state of self-doubt and insecurities. Furthermore, the constant pressure to prove one’s worth or meet unrealistic standards can intensify such insecurities.

Strategies to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

It takes time and effort to overcome Imposter Syndrome, but there are practical tips to reduce its grip:

Shifting your mindset from self-doubt to self-affirmation is foremost. You are where you are today because of your hard work and dedication. Think of yourself as someone who deserves every success rather than a fraud.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Are you also among those individuals who downplay their achievements? Well, it’s time to celebrate every win. Acknowledging your hard work and efforts is the key to challenging the cycle of self-doubt.   

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

No comparison at all. Even though it is easier said than done, it’s time we internalize these lessons and focus on our individual journey. Remember we all got a unique path.

Practice Self-Compassion

We tend to forget to treat ourselves with kindness. Self-Compassion might sound overrated but its significance cannot be overstated. Try to avoid harsh self-criticism. It’s important to remind yourself that these are just the feelings and they do not undermine your accomplishments.

Seek Support to Manage Negative Feelings

We often hesitate to share our feelings because we assume they aren’t important. However, suppressing your feelings can make you emotionally worn out and potentially bring more detrimental impacts.
