The Rise of Algorithmic Feedback Loops

How Information Policing Molds Digital Identity

Society Through A Fragmented Lens

Navigating Social Media Algorithms Through Media Literacy

Overview:

  • Social media algorithms promote the creation of personalized filter bubbles.
  • Algorithmic Feedback loops control what information we see and interact with through our preferences.
  • Emotional amplification, polarization, and visibility metrics are leading the misinformation war.
  • This can have drastic consequences for shaping the digital identity of younger generations.

Due to the astonishing rise of algorithmic AI slop, the value of authentic and emotion-driven content has become immeasurable. Now more than ever, social media algorithms hold more sway over public opinion than actual news outlets. This article is an exploration of how algorithmic feedback loops are a crucial site for identity politics and social consciousness.

The Rise of Algorithmic Feedback Loops

Algorithmic feedback loops sound like a heavy mouthful for a phenomenon that simply means personalized content bubbles. Your Instagram feed can be massively different from your family’s. This occurs because social media platforms record our preferences through our watch times, clicks, and comments. Feedback loops occur when social media platforms capture our user interactions to form an algorithm. In the last few years, there has been a troubling rise in toxic identity formation that’s directly influenced by algorithms. This trend is particularly noticeable amongst younger generations like Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

Social media algorithms prioritize majoritarian content to form patterns that would tilt the speculative narrative in their favor. For instance, a feminist’s social media algorithm will be influenced by their digital identity. Their feed would have posts about diversity and inclusion. While these algorithmic feedback loops seem to be emulating our beliefs, they are mere machinations. They can be easily manipulated by politically motivated influencers to spread their propaganda and extend their reach. When you keep hearing the same notion again and again in different formats, the idea tends to be inevitably ingrained..

How Information Policing Molds Digital Identity

The true gravity of algorithmic feedback loops can be understood through the ideas of the French Marxist philosopher, Louis Althusser. According to Althusser, our society creates Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) that demonstrate dominant ideologies through family, education, media, and culture. These ISAs are constructed to ensure that power remains in the hands of the majority.

The algorithmic feedback loops of social media platforms have become the foundation of modern ISAs. Whether the content revolves around sensationalist propaganda or rainbow capitalism in Pride Month, the idea remains the same. Trapping the user in a prison of their own making by creating micro-bubbles.

This practice of narrowing what we see and not letting alternative media reach the users is another form of social control. Althusser recognized this technique as Interpellation. The term in question refers to the process by which people recognize themselves within the ideology presented by ISAs. While the world burns away due to climate change and mass genocide, people continue to be amused by dog videos and dank humor.

Society Through A Fragmented Lens

Everything about algorithmic feedback loops urges us to look away from the problems of the real world. Chronically online people have become apathetic to critical social issues such as human rights, gender inequality, and many more. Social media algorithms give us the illusion of choice while taking away our worldviews through augmented reality. A decidedly morbid example would be how Instagram shadow-bans the posts and videos shared by refugees and victims of war.

These feedback loops are instrumental in using emotional amplification to drive their motives home. Social media algorithms use increasingly polarized posts through the push and pull of trend-driven activism and sensationalist propaganda. Sociologists have noticed how digital identity has a direct correlation with community discourse and performative alignment. Consequently, the last decade has witnessed rapid shifts in social consciousness driven by trending cycles of different movements. From brat summer to blatant online misogyny, the world of social media now serves as a landmine of socio-cultural downfall.

This sets a harrowing paradigm shift. As more and more people engage with online content, cultural instability and group behaviour have created a corrosive social environment. One in which truth is never fact-checked and cultural volatility is triggered by platform incentives.

Navigating Social Media Algorithms Through Media Literacy

Digital self-awareness and media literacy are emerging as powerful tools that would enable people to eliminate algorithmic feedback loops. This can be achieved through media literacy to help users gain critical thinking skills. The impact of social media algorithms can be mitigated by media consumers who demand credible and authentic content. Media literacy encourages social media users to consume content with discerning eyes and be receptive to contradictory viewpoints.

Intentional content habits can be imbued to escape the echo chambers. These habits include verifying information, reconfigurating algorithms through diversified viewership, and amplifying the accounts in need of humanitarian aid.

However, platforms must take responsibility to represent the whole truth through algorithmic transparency reforms. Social media users can demand platform responsibility by refusing to participate in their selective visibility programs. By dismantling the algorithm we built brick by brick, we can contribute to shaping social consciousness through our choices.

Conclusion

To escape falling into the infinite paradox of echo chambers and misinformation silos, we must start practicing conscious digital engagement. Illustratively, if you are unable to share humanitarian posts, then you can at least copy their link to maximize reach. Being on the right side of history means the choice to help those in need get the attention they deserve. Committing to ethical truths and real activism is key to ending the toxic online world created by algorithmic feedback loops.
