Despite the improvement in recent years, women remain remarkably underrepresented in leadership positions. Statistics show that these numbers show that there is still a high impact of gender imbalance in leadership. Women are highly underrepresented in leadership positions.

There are a lot of barriers that prevent women from taking up leadership positions. These include stereotypes against women, which need them to constantly prove themselves. These barriers make it challenging for women to develop their leadership skills. It is of utmost importance to address this obstacle to empower women in leadership positions.

Challenges Faced by Women in Leadership 

There are societal norms and beliefs which create an obscenity for female leaders. Women are expected to prioritize their family and perform a homely duty. This is often accompanied with the notion that they have no business pursuing a career. They are subjected to the “double bind” phenomenon. When women take charge, they are viewed as competent leaders but disliked. But when they take care they are liked but viewed as less competent leaders.

There is a tendency to always associate women with a particular role.  It is believed that some roles are gender based, and that is where gender stereotypes come in. Women are confronted that they are not emotional and competent enough to be in a certain leadership position

There are disparities in compensation. Men are often paid more than women putting in the same amount of work. The efforts of women are recognized and appreciated, which discourages them from taking leadership roles.

The Benefits of Women in Leadership Positions

Having women in leadership positions brings about diverse ideas, innovation, and creativity to the organization. Studies have shown that women-heading organizations help increase productivity, enhance collaboration, inspire organizational dedication, and improve fairness. Women help bring insight to the team and problem-solving approaches.

However, women at the helm of affairs bring about diversity in the workplace. There will be different approaches to things, as there is gender balance in the organization, and the women’s voices are not silent.  A company working together with a diverse view will bring about innovation in the organization. The spirit of collaboration is imbibed. A report by McKinsey & Company found that companies with gender-diverse executive teams were 21% more likely to experience above-average profitability.

Ways to Increase Women in Participation in Leadership Roles

One of the significant ways to increase women’s representation in leadership is to eliminate bias in hiring and promotion. To do that the organization should incorporate reviewing work performances on an objective basis and fair opportunities for leadership positions.

Creating an opportunity for skill development is another important strategy. Organizations can carry this out by providing mentorship to women and leadership development training. This training will help women build the skills and confidence required to excel in a leadership position.

Creating a supportive environment is also a crucial strategy. In the sense of implementing a flexible working environment and parental leave. The organization should create an inclusive environment where gender inequality is not tolerated. Creating this supportive environment will encourage women to be interested in leadership.

Creating an environment that fosters inclusion and eliminates bias in the workforce will  empower and encourage women in leadership roles. It is important  that women are not sidelined when it comes to leadership roles and given equal opportunities.
